A puppy class cost between NOK 1,850 and NOK 2,400 at the six clubs and dog schools below, read on 9 October 2026. But the price alone tells you little. The classes have different numbers of hours, and the clubs charge members less. Here are example prices, what membership means for the sums, and what to ask before you sign up.
Short answer
- Compare how many hours the class has, not just the price.
- The clubs listed charge members less. Factor in what membership costs.
- Whether your puppy must be vaccinated is set by whoever runs the class. It varies.
- Ask about group size, training methods and the instructor's training.
- Read the cancellation terms before you pay.

What does the law say about the instructor?
Section 6 of the Animal Welfare Act says that anyone working with animals must have the competence needed for what they do. The section doesn't say what training a dog instructor must have.
The Norwegian Kennel Club (NKK) has its own three-level instructor training. Level I covers basic training such as puppy and beginner classes. Level II is specialisation in one discipline, and level III trains new instructors. This is NKK's own scheme. NKK says many clubs try to use instructors trained and approved by NKK.
The Norwegian Food Safety Authority (Mattilsynet) says long experience doesn't necessarily mean someone has up-to-date knowledge. Ask what training the instructor has, and when they took it.
Training methods
Under section 26 c of the Animal Welfare Act, animals must not deliberately be caused fear, harm or unnecessary strain. Mattilsynet says that hard jerks on the collar and pinching the dog by the scruff can be violence, which is prohibited. Using electric shock in training is prohibited under a separate regulation. The only exception is aversion training, and anyone using electric shock against chasing grazing animals must have specific training in it.
Mattilsynet recommends rewarding what you want your dog to do, rather than punishing what you don't want. Dyrebeskyttelsen Norge says dog training should be based on positivity and reward.
Dyrevernalliansen gives this advice for choosing a class:
- No more than eight dogs with owners in the class, preferably fewer.
- The instructor should build on reward, not punishment.
- The training should cover learning theory and how dogs communicate, and that applies to every instructor on the class.
- Ask to watch a session of a class before you sign up.
- Avoid instructors who talk about "showing leadership".
Vaccination and other terms
Whether your puppy must be vaccinated is set out in the terms of whoever runs the class. Some examples:
- Sarpsborg Hundeklubb: puppies must be fully vaccinated.
- Nidaros Brukshundklubb: all puppies must be vaccinated.
- Musti Hundeskole: your puppy must be vaccinated.
- Haugesund og Omegn Hundeklubb: all dogs must bring a valid vaccination certificate.
- Oslo Hundeskole: doesn't require it, but recommends that the puppy follows the vet's vaccination programme.
If you have questions about vaccines, ask your vet.
Registration and cancellation
What happens if you have to drop out is set out in the terms of whoever runs the class. Read them before you pay, and keep them. Some examples:
- Musti Hundeskole: you must cancel at least 14 days before the class starts to get your money back. If Musti cancels the class, you get everything back.
- Haugesund og Omegn Hundeklubb: you only get your money back with a vet's certificate.
- Nidaros Brukshundklubb: registration is "financially binding".
- Nordhordland Hundeklubb: "binding registration".
