Euthanasia at home
Some clinics can come to your home, so the goodbye can happen there. We found only one clinic that publishes a price for it:
| Clinic | Cat | Dog | Travel | Date on the price list |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hjemmevet, Jessheim | from NOK 2,500 | from NOK 3,000 | "Contact us for a price for the visit" | Valid from 6 October 2026 |
Borg Dyreklinikk says it offers euthanasia at home by appointment, but gives no price. AniCura says: "Ask your clinic whether euthanasia at home is something they offer." Ask your clinic what it costs and whether it is possible where you live. You can also find clinics that offer this under Home euthanasia.
Shared or individual cremation
Afterwards you can choose between shared and individual cremation, or take the animal home with you. It is your choice, and there is no single right answer.
- Shared cremation: The animal is cremated together with other animals, and you do not get the ashes back. Both Hjertedyr and Midt-Norsk Smådyrkrematorium say so.
- Individual cremation: The animal is cremated alone, and you get the ashes back. The urn usually costs extra.
If you choose individual cremation, it can take some time before you get the urn. Midt-Norsk Smådyrkrematorium says it normally takes 1–2 weeks from when they receive the animal. Maridalsveien Smådyrklinikk gives about 4 weeks.
You can also take the animal to a crematorium yourself. At Hjertedyr in Solbergelva, individual cremation cost from NOK 3,790 to NOK 4,990 and shared cremation from NOK 1,190 to NOK 1,895, depending on weight. These prices apply when you bring the animal yourself. The crematorium says other prices apply when the animal is handed in at a veterinarian. You can find crematoriums and others that offer cremation under Cremation.
Burial at home
If you would like to bury your animal at home, this is what the rules say: under section 19 of the Animal By-products Regulations, dead pets "may be buried on your own property or in an approved area if all necessary measures have been taken to avoid any spread of disease" (our translation). If you are unsure what this means where you live, you can ask your veterinarian.
What the rules say about euthanasia
- Veterinarian: Euthanasia with medicine "must be carried out by a veterinarian or with a veterinarian present", according to section 2 of the Regulations on the euthanasia of dogs and cats (our translation).
- Anaesthesia: Animals that are owned must be anaesthetised before they are put down (section 12 of the Animal Welfare Act).
- How it is usually done: The Norwegian Food Safety Authority says a common method for pets is that the veterinarian first gives the animal an anaesthetic. When the animal is unconscious, the veterinarian gives a dose that causes it to die.
Talk to your veterinarian
Feel free to call the clinic you use and ask what euthanasia and cremation cost there. You can also ask whether you can be present, whether they can come to your home, and how long it takes before the urn is ready if you choose individual cremation. Evidensia says the price depends on species and weight, so it helps to give the animal's weight. You are welcome to ask these questions in good time. You can find clinics that offer euthanasia under Euthanasia. What you are entitled to when you ask a vet about price is covered in the guide to veterinary prices. The guides to the cost of owning a dog and a cat show the costs an animal has through the year.
