At 14 animal clinics from Lillesand to Tromsø, neutering a male cat cost from NOK 1,288 to NOK 2,819, and a female cat from NOK 2,400 to NOK 4,700. That is what their price lists said when we went through them on 10 October 2026. The gap is wide, and the price tag doesn't always tell you what you actually get. Here you can see what the clinics charge, what is included, and what to ask before your cat gets an appointment.
Dogs are a different matter, with their own rules. We get to that further down.
Male or female cat?
A female cat costs more at all 14 clinics, usually between 1.6 and 2 times as much as a male cat.
Many people say spaying for a female cat and neutering for a male. The Norwegian Food Safety Authority writes that, strictly speaking, female cats are castrated too. If one price list says "spaying a female cat" and another "neutering a female cat", it is usually the same procedure under a different name.
The Norwegian Food Safety Authority also writes that neutering cats improves animal welfare. The rules are in the guide to neutering dogs and cats.
- Male catNOK 1,288–2,819
- Female cat (spaying)NOK 2,400–4,700
At some clinics a recovery suit and a follow-up check are included; at others they cost extra
What to ask before you book
Two prices can look exactly alike and still cover different things. At Steinkjer Dyreklinikk, a wound protector or recovery suit and stitch removal are included in the price for a female cat. At Alfa Smådyrklinikk, a recovery suit costs from NOK 235 extra. Nittedal Dyreklinikk always includes a follow-up appointment afterwards.
- Are anaesthesia and pain relief included in the price?
- Do a recovery suit, a collar or a follow-up appointment cost extra?
- Is it a fixed price, or a starting price that can go up?
If your cat is to be ID marked at the same time, ask what it costs. At AniCura Dyresykehuset Bergen Sør the microchip costs NOK 750 extra. You are entitled to a written quote if you ask for one. The guide to vet prices explains what you are entitled to, and you can find veterinary clinics under Vets.
Prices clinic by clinic
The prices are what the clinics themselves wrote on their websites on 10 October 2026. They are examples, not an average for the whole country. The clinics are listed alphabetically, and "from" means the price can be higher. If the field for what is included is empty, the price list says nothing about it.

Dogs: the vet needs a good reason
Few clinics publish a price for neutering a dog. We found a dated price for male dogs at two clinics, starting at NOK 6,575. At both, the price rises with weight.
For female dogs we found no dated price for ordinary surgery. The only price we found was for keyhole surgery at AniCura Dyresykehus Oslo, from NOK 28,000. It is a different method from ordinary surgery, so the price can't be compared directly. The Norwegian Food Safety Authority writes that spaying a female dog is a bigger operation than neutering a male dog. Ask the clinic for a written quote.

Implant: a temporary alternative for male dogs
With chemical castration, the vet places a hormone implant under the male dog's skin. Evidensia calls it "a temporary alternative, in contrast to surgical castration". You choose an implant that lasts 6 or 12 months.
At four clinics, 6 months cost from NOK 1,850 to NOK 2,366, and 12 months from NOK 3,145 to NOK 3,906.
| Clinic | 6 months | 12 months | Date on the price list | Read |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AniCura Gjøvik Dyreklinikk | NOK 2,016 | NOK 3,162 | No date | 10 Oct 2026 |
| AniCura Jeløy Dyresykehus | NOK 2,366 | NOK 3,906 | No date | 10 Oct 2026 |
| Hjemmevet, Jessheim | NOK 1,850 | Not listed | Valid from 6 October 2026 | 10 Oct 2026 |
| Nittedal Dyreklinikk, Slattum | NOK 1,945 | NOK 3,145 | 1 May 2026 | 10 Oct 2026 |
- Implant, 6 monthsNOK 1,850–2,366
- Implant, 12 monthsNOK 3,145–3,906
The implant is a prescription medicine. Under section 18 of the Animal Health Personnel Act, only vets may use such medicines to treat animals, but owners may give their own animals medicines on instruction from animal health personnel. Whether the same reasons as for surgery apply to an implant isn't stated on the Norwegian Food Safety Authority's page on neutering dogs. Ask your vet.
There is also a chemical option for female cats. The Norwegian Food Safety Authority writes that heat in female cats can be postponed with hormones (contraceptive pills). Ask your vet about the price and what suits your particular cat best.
Frequently asked questions
What does it cost to spay a cat?
Between NOK 2,400 and NOK 4,700 at the 14 clinics we looked at in October 2026. Spaying a female cat is the same as neutering a female cat. Ask what is included in the price.
What does it cost to neuter a male cat?
Between NOK 1,288 and NOK 2,819 at the same clinics. Some include pain relief or a follow-up check in the price, others say nothing about it in their price list.
What does it cost to neuter a dog?
The vet needs a good reason, because routine neutering of dogs is not allowed. At the two clinics where we found a dated price, it costs from NOK 6,575 and up for a male dog, depending on weight. We found no dated price for ordinary spaying of a female dog.
What does chemical castration cost?
An implant for a male dog costs from NOK 1,850 to NOK 2,366 for 6 months and from NOK 3,145 to NOK 3,906 for 12 months at the four clinics in the table. Ask your vet whether it suits your dog.
Is there free neutering for cats?
Dyrebeskyttelsen Norge, an animal welfare organisation, ran a campaign with free neutering of cats in autumn 2025. It has ended, but it may be worth asking your local branch whether they have an offer.
